CASE STUDY

Hulu x Live Nation ‘On Stage’

Original VR series exploring the creative process and passions of artists

Description

Via a very special partnership between Hulu and Live Nation, the On Stage VR series was created to dive deep into the creative process and passions of various artists for a new level of immersive storytelling made possible by 360° cameras.

The 3-part series takes viewers to New Orleans with Lil Wayne, Kingston, Jamaica with Major Lazer, and both London and Versailles with Phoenix, exclusively on Hulu and in the Hulu VR app.

Execution

The production for this series was multi-faceted, shooting each VR/360° episode alongside both a traditional video companion episode and photography campaign for promo and key art.

I really dove deep into research of each artist’s world in the development and pre-production phases, tapping into their creative passions and the energy of their live shows during production in ways that allowed the audience to see new sides of them.

Over the course of the 3 episodes, technology in the cinematic VR space was changing rapidly and we had some significant “firsts” in cinematic VR production — first 360° camera on a cable cam rig, one of the first high-end drone shots, one of the first uses of a motorized stabilization rig, and the first to stitch a 2x RED Dragon setup with 180° lenses.

My Role

Development // Executive Producer // Creative Director // Director

I was initially brought on by Live Nation to helm the series as Director via my production company Create + Destroy, but as our relationship expanded I took on additional roles developing out the overall series thematics, individual artist approaches, and the overall creative direction for the campaigns surrounding it.
